él is talking to his Papá,
una mixta de Portugues
y Español.  I hear him say,
we are moving to montevideo
he says, Punta del Este
is not like South America at all
his father recounts a history
in Piriapolis with his mother.
I hear muy linda, el amor
de mi vida.  when we leave
his father tells me, visit us
again soon.  this is the way
they say I love you.

with my Pa, it’s blood
pressure, the doe
my nephew killed,
my latest publication.
he didn’t understand it
he says but he liked it.
Gabriel nods his head.
it was about you both,
I tell them, language barriers.
en metáforas, Gabriel adds
but Dad doesn’t think
he speaks that accent.
a few beats later
Dad laughs.  oh metaphors!
this is the way we say it.
