Interview with P. Scott Cunningham

Hinchas: Given: Hialeah can birth mythical creatures. What mythical creatures can you attribute to Hialeah? What are their powers? P. Scott Cunningham: Oh man, I’m not the guy to ask about Hialeah. Yaddra Peralta, another young Miami poet who will have a big hand in defining what I’m now terming the Miami Sound (Machine), is our resident Hialeah expert. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a mythical creature because she has this crazy ability to speak for Hialeah without trying. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to the reigning queen of Hialeah literature, Jennine Capó Crucet. Even though she’s technically a fiction writer, Jennine writes with a poet’s precision in her story collection How to Leave Hialeah. I’m not big into the distinction between poetry and fiction anyway. Hinchas: If Campbell McGrath were to be exposed to large amounts of radiation, what literary monster would ensue? And, what cities would he destroy? P. Scott Cunningham: I think he’d be fire-breathing and have four-to-six arms. Like an Irish Shiva, armed with a guitar that he’d swing only at ugly condo buildings. Campbell’s not a city-destroyer per-se, but I think his monster would enjoy making life difficult for the handful of corrupt developers who have erected some pretty hideous shit in Miami’s airspace. This place is so beautiful it’s almost impossible to fuck-up, but people have definitely made some A+ efforts. He might destroy Gary, Indiana. Or maybe that’s just me projecting onto Campbell. I’d destroy Gary, Indiana.
P. Scott Cunningham:
I distinctly remember a jai-alai episode in Miami Vice. And a couple in Mad Men. (I’m not snobby about the defintion of literature either.) And I can’t remember now if Joan Didion discussed jai-alai in Miami. I’m sure she did but I read that book a long time ago. Short answer is, yes, it’s an untapped goldmine.
As far as a death-match, I’ll go for maximum entertainment value. I’d like to see Mailer versus Hemingway. Seems like an easy win for Hem, but I’d actually bet on Mailer. |
